Château du Retout is located in the in Haut Médoc appellation in Bordeaux. The phylloxera crisis of the late 19th century and WWI brought a great deal of damage to the vineyards in Médoc. This lead to some smaller vineyards being abandoned and many small Medoc estates disappearing completely. This is what happened to Château Retout-Rosset even though it was classified as Crus Bourgeois. The estate only came back to life in the 1950s, when it was acquired by the Kopp family. The vineyards were reconstituted and replanted with a great deal of patience. Their efforts in the vineyards and the cellar has resulted in a unique boutique winery which is considered an “insider tip” among wine connoisseurs.
The wine “Esperance” is a typical Médoc cuvée based on 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, which is rounded by 32% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot. The 2016 vintage of Medoc is widely considered to be excellent, even legendary. This is very harmonious wine with an aromatic bouquet with red berries, plums and dark chocolate. The taste is rich with well-balanced tannins. This wine will pair nicely with dishes containing beef or game or maybe your favorite cheeses.
