With its almost 110 hectares of vineyards, Perrin et Fils is one of the most important and prestigious wine producers of France. The Perrin family estates include the famous Château de Beaucastel in Châteauneuf du Pape and the Domaine du Clos des Tourelles in Gigondas. Cairanne is an appellation in the southern half of the Rhone Valley and just about 15 miles up the road from the more renowned Châteauneuf du Pape. The wines from Cairanne were previously classified as Côtes du Rhône Villages, but after many years of consistently excellent vintages, it was elevated to cru status in 2016. The Mediterranean climate, with hot and dry summers, offers excellent ripening potential to the Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre grapes. The soils of Cairanne are predominantly of limestone and alluvial types, due to the presence of several local rivers and streams. This approachable red wine develops a fine aroma of cassis and Mediterranean herbs with a hint of licorice. On the palate the bright spicy red fruit aromas from grenache is combined with smooth tannins of the Mouverdre and fine velvet richness of the Syrah. This red wine is very enjoyable now but it also has good aging potential. Enjoy it with vegetables and all types of grilled dishes.
