The first in the long line of winemakers in the Kimich family was the wine cooper Andreas Kimich. He came to Pfalz and Deidesheim from Alsace and married a rich widow who owned many vineyards. Andreas Kimich brought with him wine making knowledge from Alsace and the Kimich winery was founded 1758. The estate was managed by the Kimich family in five further generations. In 1949 Joachim Arnold married a daughter of Julius Ferd. Kimich and took over the management a few years later. Today his son Franz and grandson Matthias, who represents the eighth generation, run the business. Through careful work in the vineyard and cellar, they produce top-class wines.

The rivaner grape, which is also called Müller-Thurgau, is one of the six white grape varietals grown by Kimich. The varietal It is named after Professor Müller of Thurgau, who created this new varietal in 1882 by crossing Riesling and Gutedel. While it requires less sun than Riesling, it does need more water and soil with good drainage. This is a light and refreshing wine, with a flowery bouquet and fine acidity – perfect for the summer aperitif.
